How to Write about Your work: 100 Characters at a time

AP 2D Design and AP Drawing courses have a writing component.

Seeing the word writing, stops many students in their tracks. The good news is, while there is writing, it’s not a lot, in fact it’s 100 characters per piece. Students have 100 characters to write about the materials they use, this part comes easily to most, for example you might write, graphite pencil, charcoal paper, and watercolor. The next step is to explain your process in 100 characters, and this is the part where some student struggle.

During our class call, we spent some time working through this together, and I want to share it with you.

5 Steps to writing about your process.

  1. Write down what you did, and don’t worry about the amount characters. Be sure to explain what inspired you, and what were the steps that you took to create the piece.
  2. Read what you wrote, if you repeat yourself at all, delete the repetitive parts.
  3. Are there any words that you can abbreviate, go through and do that.
  4. Check how many characters you have.
  5. If you need to get rid of more, ask yourself what is the most interesting, or most surprising part about your process, and delete the rest.
