 Megan Auman and Creative Process

In this interview I spoke with Megan Auman, who is a jewelry designer, painter, and now textile designer. We take a look at her creative process and discuss how she keeps a clear focus while working in a wide variety of mediums.

Pinterest came up a lot in this conversation as a source of inspiration. We’ll be getting into pinterest a bit more next week. But in the mean time, if you haven’t already joined, I would suggest doing so. You can find Megan here, and check out my collection of inspiration here.

Creative thinkers tend to have a lot of ideas. And can feel like they’re all over the place. Ideas are great, but we have to find a way to put them into action. To start this process it’s important for you to understand the purpose behind your work. It may be something simple, like I want people to have beautiful art in their homes, or it might go much deeper.

For example, I want my work to make women feel beautiful and confident, so that they are able to speak up and make a difference in the world. Because my goal is for women to be more confident, I need to create work that makes them feel special. That means that I create one-of-a-kind pieces. It also means that I want to be something that is easy and comfortable to wear ( I want them to wear it everyday), but it is also needs to be bold and stand out. I want the scarf to start the conversation. All of these goals inform my work as I’m designing.

Pinterest to grow your brand, blog or following.

I know that some of you are here , because you want to be more creative in your own life, while others want to be more creative, but also want to use it to grow their business. Last week I had you start playing with pinterest, as it’s a wonderful tool to use for inspiration, ideas, directions, and to help you to figure out your own aesthetic, but it can also be a great tool to share and market your work. Dannielle, spent a few months working to grow her pinterest following, and was able to increase her following by several thousand in just a few months, which also brought a lot of new traffic to her blog, so I asked if she would be willing to share some of her tips with you.

While we meant to just talk about pinterest we started discussing photography, and a whole host of other art/ handmade related topics.

Tuesday March 3

It’s hard to believe that we’re in week three. I know that some of the work that you have do in your workbook can be hard, but it’s so important.  Once you’re confident in what you’re doing and why you’re doing it, it so much easier to move forward, and to create everyday.

This week you’re going to do one of my favorite activities, the idea generation chart. I use it all of the time, and I use it with my students. It a fun and fast way to start making new connections in your brain and coming up with new ideas.

This week you’re going to work on pages 38-59. If you’re not there yet, that’s fine, back up and get the other pages finished first. And remember that I’m her to support and help you.

Play

Yesterday my photography class was taking photos using action figures. This is always one of my favorite assignments, not only because the photos turn out well, but because the students have so much fun. I teach high school, so they don’t spend much time outside, let alone outside playing with toys. As I sat and watched them, it reminded me of how important play is to creativity. While there’s a lot of work involved, there should also be a lot of fun!

Here’s a video that if you’re an animal lover should make you laugh.

It’s time to have some fun, go out of your comfort zone, and start creating. You all have a lot going on and were already having trouble finding time to create, so I”m guessing that adding the course content into your schedule, has you creating even less. Well that’s no good. This course is about creativity, which means that you need to be creating.

One of the best ways to really hone in on your creative process, is by creating… A LOT , and reflecting on the process.

Take some time this week, and create, have fun, be playful. After each time that you create take a few minutes to reflect on the process.

How did you feel?

What time of day was it?

When your idea worked how did it make you feel?

If your idea wasn’t working, how did that make you feel?

If you got stuck, how did you respond?

What made you decide to start making?

What made you decide to stop creating?

Have fun, and I can’t wait to see what you create!
