We got it wrong
We got it wrong
when we said that there was one right answer
We got it wrong
when we said these are the rules that you have to follow
don’t ask questions
don’t color outside of the lines
Hold your pencil this way
We got it wrong
when we tried to make everyone the same
When we decided that math and english were more important than art and shop
When we made it that you had to be good at tests in order to be good at anything
We got it wrong
when we said that the troubled kids didn’t care
When we gave them detention or told them that they weren’t allowed to come to school
We got it wrong
when we told the kids to stop daydreaming
To stop doodling
To stop asking questions
To stop making messes
To stop … just stop… please stop thinking
We got it wrong
when we rewarded memorization and punished implementation
we got it wrong
when some subjects became the common core and the others…
well who cares… they’re extra
We got it wrong
when everyone needed to write the same way
walk the right way
talk that way
and look the other way
when it’s wrong if you don’t do it my way
We got it wrong
when the child who dreamed of being a photographer instead went off to war
When the boy who could build a car failed every class that he took
or when the silent skateboarder was labeled as lazy and dumb
We got it wrong
when we forgot who we were, what we stood for and where we were.
We got it wrong
because we
forgot
forgot
forgot
forgot
forgot
forgot
forgot
Our schools got it wrong and continue to do so, and I’m a mission to change that. To bring thinking, dreaming, passion back into the equation. That’s why I designed Changing Minds, it’s a course to bring back your dreams, your creativity, your ideas, and bring them to life. With Changed Minds we can change the world. Won’t you join me?
