One Step to end the Marking Period with Ease

grading

When I first started teaching I would dread the end of each marking period. Suddenly student after student would be asking for extra credit, and wanting to know what I gave them a ” C”, never wanting to claim that they may have played a role in the gradeĀ  that they earned. Then reports cards would go home, and I’d receive angry parent emails wondering how in the world their child got a “c” in art class, surely it was somehow my fault.

While I”m sure that there were only a few emails, the weight of those emails felt like 100’s. They added unwanted work and stress to an already busy time of the year. I wanted to be spending time with my husband, creating art of my own, and writing new lesson plans, and I’m sure that you feel the same way.

I knew that there had to be a better way, and it turns out there is.

This isn’t the best video recording, as it was from facebook live, but many people wanted a good way to save it.

I developed the marking period grade reflection sheet, a simple sheet that takes a few minutes for students to fill out, but cut the parent emails to zero, and put all of the responsibility back on the student, exactly where it should be.

The end of the marking period, was less stressful, students no longer lined up asking for extra credit, and parents stopped expecting grade changes, and I no longer needed to drink a bottle of wine each night. ( just kidding, I didn’t drink a whole bottle)

Instead of headaches and tight shoulders, there was ease. I want that ease for you, join me.
