Fun Ways to Teach Art History

Posted in blog

One thing that I’ve always loved about teaching AP Art History is coming up with assignments that are fun for students to complete, that help them to remember information, and help them to see how things connect to each other.

For the Art Tree of Influence assignment, students explore how artists influence each other throughout history. They search for connections in style and technique. Students determine how they wish to present the information.

In Art History it can be hard to remember all of the different parts of buildings and architecture. As a fun way to review , I have students design their own buildings. The buildings are a blend of several styles and time periods. . . “My building is an architecture history museum meant for the general public. It houses artifacts, models, and photos of all kinds of architecture. The building itself is a mix of five different styles from different cultures and time periods including Greek, Byzantine, Gothic, Egyptian, and Modern. The Greek section is in the front of the museum on the ground floor. It is where the front entrance is. It contains columns and a statue to represent classical Greek temples. The Byzantine section and Gothic section are intertwined sharing the second floor. The walls and stained-glass windows are from the Gothic era as well as one of the towers. The dome roof and the minaret belong to the Byzantine section. The Egyptian wing is in the shape of a pyramid, the place where pharaohs would be buried and an important part of Egyptian culture. The modern wing is an eclectic mixture of sleek angles and bold colors to represent the De Stijl, International Style, and Art Deco movements. ” . #studentwork
