Art Lesson: Exploring and Experimenting with new materials
A big part of marking art is understanding the medium(s) that you’re using. What can and can’t the medium do? How far can you push it? What other mediums can you combine with it?
To start exploring mediums, challenge yourself to create a list of 50 things that you can create with. Hint: they don’t have to be traditional items that you can find at an art store. For example, you could use a mascara wand to create some interesting marks when drawing or painting.
After you’ve developed your list, do the following:
- Circle the items that you’ve never used before
- put a star next to the items that you’ve used before and love
- cross out the materials that you’ve used before, but didn’t like
Now, grab your sketchbook and try at least 3 of the items that you’ve circled. You can combine those with starred items as well.
What is one new thing that you learned?
What is one idea, material, or technique, that you want to bring into your own work/process?
