Understanding the writing requirements for AP Studio Art Courses

AP Studio Art courses ask students to write about their process. At first glance, it seems like students are going to need to do a lot of writing in the AP art course, however, that isn’t the case.

While students do need to write about each piece, the responses must be short. Think more like a tweet than a 5 paragraph essay.

Students will create 15 pieces that demonstrate sustained investigation. As they work on those pieces they need to write the following about each piece.

Identify the following for each image:

  • Materials used (100 characters maximum, including spaces)
  • Processes used (100 characters maximum, including spaces)
  • Size (height × width × depth, in inches)

Here’s what that looks like.

Next, they’ll write in more detail about their process throughout the 15 pieces. Students will:

Identify the questions that guided your sustained investigation

Describe how your sustained investigation shows evidence of practice, experimentation, and revision guided by your questions (1200 characters maximum, including spaces, for response to both prompts)

Students will also send in 5 selected works. For AP 2D Design and AP Drawing, these 5 pieces are physical pieces that are sent to the college board. These can be from the 15 pieces that demonstrate sustained investigation or different pieces. Here’s what you’ll need to write about those pieces.

For each work, state the following in writing:

  • Idea(s) visually evident (100 characters maximum, including spaces)
  • Materials used (100 characters maximum, including spaces)
  • Processes used (100 characters maximum, including spaces)
