High School Art Curriculum for Homeschoolers
When people hear that I teach AP Art courses online to homeschool students, they usually have a lot of questions, and I’m betting you do as well.
Since I teach the courses through PA Homeschoolers, many people think that they can only take the courses if they live in PA, but that isn’t the case. As long as you have internet access you can take the courses. In fact, each year students from all over the world to my AP 2D Design and AP Drawing course online. Once the course starts, students have access to all course content, making it simple to learn and complete assignments no matter what time zone you’re in.
Students post their assignments in Google Classroom, where myself, and their classmates give them feedback. We also have live calls throughout the course. The calls are not required and are recorded so even if you can’t make it, you can learn from the conversation.
Next, you might be wondering if you have to be a homeschooled student to take the courses. The answer is no. There are often students that are taking some courses at a local school and some online. Or students that attend a school full time, but their school doesn’t offer an AP art course.
A Few more common questions
Does it really work to take art classes online? Yes, it does. I’ve taught art both in person and online, and while there are pros and cons to both, in the age of video, taking art courses online are a wonderful opportunity. I’m able to show you everything that I could if you were sitting in a classroom in front of me. You are also able to rewatch videos to review the information that you’re having trouble with and skip through videos that cover topics where you’re already knowledgable.
What if I just want to take the course to better my art skills, but don’t want to try for the AP Credit? That’s fine, and up to you and your parents. You have two options. One, you can audit the course, you’ll see more about that on the course page. Or you can take the course for a grade and choose not to submit a portfolio or sit for the written test at the end.
Do you have a homeschool art curriculum that we can follow at our pace? If this is you. I would recommend that you select the audit option. This will give you access to all of the course content. You just won’t receive any grades or feedback from me. It also allows you to move at your own pace.
