Understanding Art Making and the Role of Material and Process
In the videos below we’ll explore examples of the role that materials and process play when making a work of art. Before we watch the first video, grab your sketchbook and something to write with. I’m going to set a timer for one minute, write down as many materials to create art with that you can think of.
- Put a start next to the materials on your list that you love using.
- Put a check next to the materials on your list that you’ve never used before, but are curious about.
- Cross out any materials that you listed that you know you don’t like working with.
As you watch the first video, write down any additional materials that you think of that sound interesting to explore.
When selecting materials and process, you also need to think about the size of the piece. Keep in mind that for AP studio art, 5 of your pieces will be submitted physically, and can’t be larger than 18″x 24″. While you are allowed to submit high-quality digital reproductions, I”m going to steer you away from those. The idea of sending 5 pieces for people to see in person is a way to highlight your brushstrokes, skilled collage work, and pencil marks, that are never fully shown in digital reproduction.
Other than those 5 pieces, the work can be whatever size you wish.
