Exploring Revision in Art Making

Grading rubric from the College Board

As I looked over the section of Inquiry and practice, experimentation, and revision, I thought of artists, Molly Springfield. She uses a copy machine in her work, which can be a great tool to help students explore revision without worrying about making an error.

Idea #1:

Make a piece.

Make a copy of the copy, and do that 5 times, playing with size.

Take your copies and continue to play with them. Draw on top, cut apart, add color.

Reflect on how your piece changed, what do you like, what don’t you like?

Idea #2

Do a similar process digitally.

Take a photo or scan of your piece.

Load it onto the computer, play with different croppings.

Explore enlarging the piece.

Play with different colors, adding text and make 10 different versions.
