Who is Amber Kane

Posted in blog

When people ask me what do I do… my first thought is… it’s complicated… you won’t understand.

I’m pretty sure that most people in my neighborhood think that I don’t work and instead think that I just wander around with my dogs all day, and occasionally sit in the backyard on my computer.

Art Teacher: ( instagram, teacher.kane)

I’m an art teacher. I wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember. After teaching 9-12 grade art in the public school system for 8 years, I resigned, thinking that I was letting go of the Art Teacher title. However, I quickly realized that I missed teaching and that being a teacher is a part of who I am. I started teaching online and never stopped ( there were a few other steps, but this is the condensed version). Currently, I teach AP Drawing, AP 2D Design, and AP Art History online.

Textile Designer:

Some people refer to me as an artist, but I’ve always liked the title of textile designer better. I started making one-of-a-kind scarves about 9 years ago. I spent time doing fine craft shows, trade shows and selling online, as well as a brief stint co-owning a gallery. My textile design tends to go in flux with my teaching. If I’m not weaving, I’m still creating in some way, as creating makes me a better teacher and person. You can keep up with what I’m creating if you follow me on instagram.

Head of Compliance:

This is a recent title that came as a surprise. It’s something I never aimed to do, as I didn’t even know that it was a thing. It started off as one small project, that led to another, then another, and turned into a full-time position that I love. I left public education because I was frustrated with the system and felt like I couldn’t make a change from the inside, but also had no idea how to make a change from the outside. It turns out, understanding education policy, teacher licensure, and accreditation are ways that you can start to shift education. So that’s what I do.

Walker:

I love to walk. After moving to the city, I stopped biking, as walking seemed so much easier, parked my car and have gone through a lot of shoes. My preferred mode of transportation…. my feet. Walking also helps me to think, solve problems, and stay creative.

Animal mom:

Cute animals are the way to my heart. I have two Shiba Inu’s that go on a lot of walks with me, and a cat.

Dreamer and Question Asker:

I like to dream big, ask hard questions and then try to solve them. I also love to ask other people questions, helping them to think deeper and develop their own answers. While I like finding answers, I don’t like giving people answers.

Meeting Hater/ Action Taker:

If it can be sent in an email, email me, don’t invite me to a meeting. If there’s something to do, a task to check off of the list, I’m there.

Confetti Maker:

Living in the city made me very aware of how much trash we create. I’ve always enjoyed thinking about how to reuse and use what I have, but the trash lined streets gave me renewed energy. Colored envelops from letters, used post-it notes, and any other bits of colored paper gets cut and added to my confetti box. I also empty my hole punch into the box. This allows me to add a fun pop of color to any and all mail that I send, and make recycling both fun and pretty!
