How to find FREE materials to teach Fiber Arts

Art materials can be expensive, but they can also be FREE.

If you’ve been thinking about wanting to explore fiber arts, but aren’t sure how to afford it, here’s an idea for you.

Reach out to your fellow co-workers and encourage them to clean out their t-shirt drawer. You could also look through the lost and found, as there are often items that go unclaimed forever. Once you have a large collection of t-shirts, teach your students how to cut the shirts into long strips.

Now it’s time to explore. Students can weave with strips. They can also learn to crochet or do things like macrame. Below you’ll find two videos that walk you through the process of turning t-shirts into endless art materials.

To get started we’ll use a scrap piece of paper because it’s much less intimidating than diving right into cutting fabric.

Now that you’ve mastered, let’s move onto some fabric.

Now you’re ready to weave.

You might also love using this to crochet or to create a rag rug.

Here’s a video form The Art Assignment to give you more inspiration about creating a rag rug.
