Online Art Classes for Home School Students
Is it okay if I don’t live in Pa?
Yes, even though I teach through PA homeschoolers, it doesn’t matter where you live. As long as you have access to the internet.
How much artwork do students create in this class?
Students need to submit 15 digital images to the college board for their portfolio, we create more than what is required, as we know that not everything we make is going to turn out as planned. The goal is to create 12 pieces each semester include things like work in sketchbooks, experimentations, and the like. The number of total completed pieces varies on the students’ work process, style, and overall goals. Some students love to work in their sketchbooks and spend a significant amount of time planning, those students end up submitting less finished piece( maybe 5-7) and more sketchbook work. Other students strongly dislike working in their sketchbook and focus more on producing finished pieces, so they would submit more finished pieces and less process work. If I live outside of the USA can I still take the course?
You bet, while there is a live call each week, all course content is delivered via video and worksheets, that you can access at any time. I do the best that I can to work with all time zones in the live calls, but if you can’t make it, there is always a recording. To get a better understanding of what a class call is like you can review a recording here.
Do I have to be homeschooled in order to take a class with you?
No, you don’t. Students take online AP courses for all sorts of reasons. Some students take the courses because the school that they attend doesn’t offer AP courses.
Does it really work to take art classes online?
Yes it does. I’ve taught art both in person and online, and while there are pros and cons to both, in the age of video, taking art courses online is a wonderful opportunity. I’m able to show you everything that I could if you were sitting in a classroom in front of me. Watch the videos below for samples of students’ work and feedback. You can also give a sample lesson a try here.
What if I just want to take the course to better my art skills, but don’t want to try for the AP Credit?
That’s fine, and up to you and your parents. You have two options. One, you can audit the course, you’ll see more about that on the course page. Or you can take the course for a grade and choose not to submit a portfolio or sit for the written test at the end.
How does the schedule of the class, work? What I have a lot of other things going on and want to take this class?
Students are always welcome to work ahead in class. You will have access to all class content at the start of class. It is important that students don’t miss too many due dates as if they fall really far behind, it’s hard to catch up, to balance this they are provided with 3 late passes each semester, where they can submit work late as needed. Students often also use breaks throughout the year to catch up or work ahead on their assignments. This works well as long as students continue to submit work as they complete it, so that they receive feedback, instead of doing 3 assignments at once and then submitting them all at once, as this doesn’t allow them to learn and apply feedback from one piece to the next. It’s common for students in my classes to need some flexibility for similar situations, and as long as everyone communicates, we make it work.
