How to Make a Schedule, Avoid Chaos, and Still be Creative
As many parents, students, and teachers are trying to navigate what it looks like to do online a big question is how to help students plan. Online learning naturally creates more autonomy for students, which can be a good thing, if they are provided with the right information and supports. Even as adults we often struggle with planning and getting things done on time.
When it comes to making art, there is a common myth that artists follow no rules, have no schedule, and in interest in deadlines, when in fact, most successful artists follow a pretty strict schedule, which allows them to produce large bodies of work. The other thing that a clear plan/schedule does, is it allows our brains to focus on creating solutions instead of needing to make countless decisions throughout the day.
Without a schedule, we spend our days jumping from one task to another, in a constant state of distraction. With a plan, we’re able to stay focused and make serious progress towards our goals and projects.
Without a plan, we’re forced to make small, seemingly simple, decisions all day. Like what should I do do next? Our brains do not have an infinite capacity to make good decisions. We want to reserve decision making power, for things that actually matter. Having a schedule, allows us the room to think about what is the perfect composition that tells the story of pain and wonder? What is the exact combination of words on the page that will help people to understand the importance of your story?
