How to Prepare for Scholastic Art Awards

Posted in blog

As you’re researching and planning for college, you’re also likely looking for ways to earn scholarships. Have you considered entering your work in the Scholastic Art Awards?

How to get started

  1. Look at previous award winners to get a sense of the caliber of work submitted: dwriting.org/gallery, and here https://www.artandwriting.org/gallery/awards
  2. Narrow your search and view those that won awards, making notes about common themes, compositions, or use of elements and principals that can inform your work:  https://www.artandwriting.org/gallery
  3. Explore the categories and think about what materials and processes you want to focus on. OR uncover a material that you’ve never tried, but are excited to explore: https://www.artandwriting.org/gallery/art
  4. Understand deadlines: The deadlines are by region: https://www.artandwriting.org/regions/

Finding a teacher

Now that you have an understanding of the process and are ready to move forward, you need to make sure that you have the name and contact information of a teacher that is willing to support you. You can start by asking any of the art teachers at the school that you attend, or looking for someone outside of your school, like a tutor that will work with you. When asking a teacher to support you, be specific so that it’s easy for them to say yes.
