AP Studio Art Scoring

Understanding Row A

The rubric that the college board uses to score the sustained investigation for the AP Studio Art Portfolio is an analytic rubric, with 4 rows. An analytic rubric means that each row is scored independently. In this series, we’re going to look at examples provided by the college board, row by row.

Inquiry

Think of inquiry as the idea, topic, or subject that you’re interested in, and what you want to learn or uncover. If you’re having trouble thinking of an inquiry take some time to explore museum exhibitions, noting that the title of an exhibit often connects to inquiry.

As you look at your own work, reflect on the following:

  • What is your inquiry?
  • Look at a few pieces of your work, can you draw lines between your inquiry and where we see visual evidence showing up in your work?
  • Write down your inquiry, then list at least 5 examples of visual evidence. For example, when looking at the Met, we noted patchwork quilts and the American Flag.
