Pretend you’re someone else, Find more ideas
Another activity to help you generate ideas is to pretend that you are someone else. Start by thinking of someone you believe would know how to solve your problem. Once you’ve identified someone, pretend that you are them.
Imagine:
How do they come up with ideas?
What do they read?
Where do they search for inspiration?
What do they do throughout the day?
Your goal is to start to think like someone else, which provides you with a new perspective.
There are a couple of reasons why this is helpful. Sometimes we struggle with finding ideas or solutions to problems because we’re afraid of failing. When we pretend we’re someone else, that gives us a little bit of a barrier; even if we don’t come up with a great idea or a solution, it’s okay because it wasn’t our idea.
Pretending that you’re someone else gives you more permission to fail.
It also challenges us to think in different ways. If you’re stuck on a problem, the way you usually address problems or work through things isn’t working for what you’re trying to solve.
When you pivot and start to ask, what would this other person do? How would they approach the problem? That mindset shift starts to change your patterns and behaviors, which can lead to new ideas. And that can be just enough.
What problem are you trying to solve? Who will you pretend to be as you search for solutions?
