Why You Should Experiment More
I was repotting plants and heard myself say several times, “Let’s try this.. we’ll run an experiment.” Yes, I talk to myself A LOT, but more importantly, I realized how often I tell myself that I’m running an experiment.
Experiments give permission to fail
When you’re doing an experiment, you have permission to fail, that’s baked into the word experiment, you’re saying this might work, it also might not, but no matter what, I’m going to learn something.
I started publishing low content books…
Why, because it seemed like an interesting experiment. I LOVE making books and am passionate about helping people know how to plan and break down BIG projects, so why not give it a try and see what happens?
I’m illustrating and publishing children’s books…..
Why, because my brother has a lot of story ideas and he needs someone to create images that go with his words. It’s not only a fun project to work on with my brother, but I view it as a creative experiment. It pushes me to come up with new ways to make pictures and allows me to provide more examples to my students about how to share their artwork.
I’m working out more….
Why, because my husband has grand plans for us to do a 20-mile hike in one day, and it’s not a flat 20 miles. I’m experimenting with my body to push myself to do something that’s hard. That means walks every day and lots of workout outs with Kass and Emily on their Little Bits of Fitness app.
What’s your experiment?
An experiment should be anything that you’re curious about or anything that you want to do, but you’ve been afraid to try. It can be small or big, but it needs to be something that you can start taking action on now. Change your mindset from a to-do list, due dates, and projects, to a life filled with creative experiments.
