The Book That Will Make You Feel Strong and Calm

Posted in Books

Sensory paths are becoming common parts of elementary school hallways. They give students a chance to move and take calming breaths, helping anxious feelings to move through their bodies, calming the child, so they’re ready to return to class and continue learning.

The downside is that sensory walks require space, design skills, materials, and extra adults to monitor each child as they exit the classroom to move through the sensory path in the hall.

What is a Sensory Path?

There is no right way to create a sensory path, but most are made up of various experiences. You’ll see them painted on a wall in the hallway and the hallway floor. You’ll find mazes, breathing exercises, hopscotch, and a few exercise moves. Sensory paths encourage students to move and use several of their senses.

Calm Corners

An alternative to a sensory path is a calm corner. Teachers create a space in their classroom where students can move that allows them to complete calming breathing practices, review emotion cards that help them reflect on their feelings, or mazes to help calm their minds. Calm corners are great for at school and home.

The Body Book

The Body Book is designed so that students can work through calming activities while still in the classroom. The story and workouts make it easy and fun for any teacher to guide their class through a few exercises. The book is perfect to add to a calm corner, and we also know that there are plenty of parents and teachers that don’t have room for a calm corner. Maybe your space is small, you share the space, or teach on a cart, keep a few copies of The Body Book with you, for students to explore while staying at their desk, or get a copy for each child.

Research tells us that exercise makes us stronger, and helps us to focus, generate ideas, and process our feelings.

The Body Book helps teach kids about making positive choices to strengthen their body and mind daily.
