How to make your own hand-cut recycled confetti

I can’t remember what my mom and I were talking about, but she shared that she’d been collecting junk mail. She had all kinds of ideas about how she was going to use it to teach reading.

This prompted me to start thinking about how to better use the FREE materials that are around us to make art.

I started saving post-it notes after they’d been written on and were no longer needed, and kept my eye for colored junk mail. Soon I started cutting the colored paper that would usually end up in the trash can, into confetti.

Not only did I find the process of cutting the paper soothing, but it was also rewarding to take what would usually be trash and turn into a box of joy. Now people rarely receive mail from me that doesn’t include some confetti.

If you’d like to give this a try, here are some ideas of how to use your new pile of hand-cut recycled confetti.

  1. If you work at a school make the other teachers aware of your confetti supply, they just may need some for their own celebrations.
  2. Use it as a station for earlier finishers. Kids will love watching the confetti collection grow and are sure to have some of their ideas as to what you can do with it.
  3. Use it at parties.
